WP3: Structural optimization of wind turbine blades

Objective: Structural optimization is an important step for constructing wind turbine blades and it determines the cost of blades. Using the aerodynamic loading obtained in WP2 as input, the blade sandwich structure will be optimized. First, a structural optimization model for wind turbine airfoils will be introduced to optimize the blade sectional stiffness based on the coupling effects with aerodynamic forces. Second, an integrated aerodynamic and structural blade model will be developed using the data information obtained in WP2. Based on the specific features of offshore wind conditions in China, structural optimizations will be carried out. The multidisciplinary integrated analysis method for airfoil aerodynamic performance and blade aero-elasticity will be used to consider the coupling effects of the blade shape and aero-elasticity, and the high-performance wind turbine blades under offshore wind conditions in China which are characterised by light weight, high efficiency and good aero-elastic stability.

Expected results: New integrated aerodynamic and structural blade model, new blade structures under offshore wind conditions in China.
